Tucked in the Gallatin Valley between the Bridger and Tobacco Root mountain ranges, Belgrade, Montana, sits at the center of some of the most historically rich and scenically dramatic landscapes in the American West.

Within an hour of Belgrade, you’ll find three exceptional Montana State Parks that span ancient history, geological wonder, and frontier-era adventure. Whether you’re planning a day trip or a multi-night camping getaway, these parks deliver memories that go far beyond the typical tourist trail.

Missouri Headwaters State Park in Montana

Missouri Headwaters State Park: Where Three Iconic Rivers Meet

Distance from Belgrade, Montana: 20 miles (about 23 minutes)

Missouri Headwaters State Park marks the exact spot where the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin rivers converge to form the mighty 2,300-mile Missouri River.

This site carries enormous historical weight: In 1805, Meriwether Lewis stood at this very confluence. Sacajawea, the Shoshone guide instrumental to the expedition's success, was captured here as a child and later returned as a member of the Corps of Discovery. Explorer John Colter, after parting ways with the expedition, began his famous run from Blackfeet warriors somewhere in this same region.

Today, the park preserves much of that original landscape, with historical buildings and interpretive sites scattered around the area. Visitors can fish, float the rivers, picnic, bike, or walk the flat, easy trails that wind through the area.

A popular route is the Gallatin River, Headwaters, Fort Rock, and Headwaters North Loop, an easy, 2.8-mile fairly flat loop, which takes you to many of the park’s highlights. Missouri Headwaters is beautiful in all seasons, and the flat trails make this park a great winter day trip from Belgrade. The park also features 17 campsites and a tipi rental for those wanting to stay overnight.

Cliff at Madison Buffalo Jump State Park in Montana

Madison Buffalo Jump State Park: 2,000 Years of Native History

Distance from Belgrade, Montana: 22 miles (about 27 minutes)

Perched on the edge of a broad valley carved by the Madison River, Madison Buffalo Jump State Park preserves one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the Northern Rockies. For nearly 2,000 years, Native American tribes used this high limestone cliff to hunt bison, driving vast herds off the edge in carefully coordinated stampedes known as a "pishkun."

Skilled young men called "runners" wore the skins of buffalo, antelope, or wolves to lure animals toward the cliff. The technique was abandoned after the introduction of horses sometime after 1700, but the site remains a striking testament to the ingenuity of the people who depended on it for survival. Buffalo bones still lie buried at the base of the cliff, and archaeologists have identified tipi rings from an extensive village nearby.

Interpretive displays help visitors understand the history and culture surrounding this dramatic hunting method. Two trails offer access to the site: the longer Buffalo Jump State Park Loop (3.7 miles) and the shorter Buffalo Jump State Park Inner Loop (2.4 miles). Both include some elevation gain and bring you to the cliff's edge for beautiful views of the landscape below.

Inside lit caverns at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park in southwest Montana

Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park: Go Underground in This Montana State Park

Distance from Belgrade, Montana: 44 miles (about 47 minutes)

Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park is the oldest Montana State Park (established in 1937) and home to one of the most highly decorated limestone caverns in North America.

Visitors can join a guided tour to explore the park’s underground caves. The Classic Cave Tour is a longer, more difficult walking tour that ascends and descends many stairs. The Paradise Tour is shorter and mostly flat, making it accessible for most visitors. Children under 5 are welcome on the Paradise Tour, making it a great activity to do with kids near Belgrade. Tours run primarily May through September, with special candlelight tours offered during select weeks in December.

Above ground, the park offers camping, hiking, and biking on trails open year-round. The visitor center, gift shop, food concessions, and amphitheater are open during the warmer months.
