Two Mountains, One Home Base

Bridger Bowl

This community-owned, nonprofit mountain about 35 minutes from Belgrade is known for steep terrain, light and dry "cold smoke" powder, and a no-frills, true-Montana feel. Beginners get gentle groomers, intermediates get great cruising, and experts get The Ridge, where they hike for fresh lines.

Big Sky Resort

One of the largest ski resorts in North America, Big Sky has more than 5,800 skiable acres and the Lone Peak Tram. The terrain is spread out enough that you spend more time skiing than waiting in line. The drive through Gallatin Canyon is worth the trip on its own.

Not a Skier? No Problem.

From wildlife watching in Yellowstone to warm soaks under the stars, here are a few ways to enjoy a Montana winter away from the ski lifts, all within an easy drive of Belgrade.

  • Yellowstone in winter. The North Entrance near Gardiner is open to cars all year. Watch for bison, elk, and wolves in Lamar Valley, and walk the steaming boardwalks at Mammoth Hot Springs.
  • Hot springs soaks. Norris Hot Springs has live music on weekend evenings. Chico and Yellowstone Hot Springs are good stops on the way back from the park.
  • Snowshoe to frozen waterfalls. The Palisade Falls and Grotto Falls trails in Hyalite Canyon end at striking ice formations.
  • Cross-country skiing. Crosscut Mountain Sports Center in Bridger Canyon grooms trails for both classic and skate skiing and offers rentals and lessons. It's a quieter alternative to the downhill areas.
  • An evening in Bozeman. Just 15 minutes away, you'll find Main Street shops, galleries, dinner, and live music.

The Holidays, Belgrade Style

When the snow comes, Belgrade shows its community spirit. If your trip lands in late November or December, join in on these local celebrations.

  • Flip the Switch Night. The Holiday Light Park lights up for the season with a community countdown.
  • Christmas Truck Village and Christmas Convoy. Nearly 100 working trucks, covered in lights, roll through town on a seven-mile route. It's a nod to Belgrade's working-class roots.
  • Belgrade Holiday Market. More than 100 local makers and vendors, plus photos with Santa.
  • Jingle Jog 5K and the Get Ugly Christmas Outfit Contest. Runners, walkers, and strollers are all welcome.
  • Holiday Hoopla. Carolers, local vendors, and downtown shops along Main Street.
