Montana in October: What to Expect

Key Takeaways

  • Montana in October brings crisp fall days with average highs in the low-to-mid 50s°F and overnight lows around 30°F, plus peak fall colors.
  • October is shoulder season for tourism, so Yellowstone crowds thin out, most park roads stay open through October 31, and lodging rates come down from their summer peak.
  • Popular fall activities include leaf-peeping hikes, blue-ribbon fly fishing, pumpkin patches and corn mazes, and last-call Yellowstone day trips before the November 1 road closures.
  • October events center on collegiate football games (Montana State University and University of Montana), plus harvest markets and fall festivals around Bozeman.

October is one of the most underrated times to visit Montana. The summer rush is over, the cottonwoods and aspens turn gold, and the whole region settles into a slower, cozier pace. You get crisp blue-sky days, quieter trails, and a front-row seat to harvest season and Bobcat football.

If you're planning a trip to Montana in October, the timing works in your favor in a way it doesn't  in July . Lodging that books out months ahead in summer opens back up, and prices around Bozeman and Big Sky come down from their peak-season highs. You'll still want to plan around the weather, which turns quickly this time of year, but finding a place to stay is far less of a scramble.

That's where Belgrade makes a smart home base. The  Bozeman-Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) is located right here in Belgrade, and local hotels tend to have better availability and friendlier prices than the ones in larger cities or closer to Yellowstone. Plus, there’s no shortage of  fall festivities to enjoy right here in Belgrade .

What's the Weather Like in Montana in October?

October is when fall fully arrives in most of Montana. In southwest Montana, around Belgrade and Bozeman, daily highs start in the low-to-mid 50s°F early in the month and cool as October goes on, with overnight lows dropping to around 30°F. Frosty mornings are normal, afternoons can still be pleasant and sunny, and the first valley snow usually shows up late in the month. Higher elevations see it much sooner.

A few things to pack:

  • A warm jacket and layers for cold mornings that give way to milder afternoons
  • A waterproof shell for rain or an early snow shower
  • Shoes with good traction for muddy or frosty trails
  • Gloves and a hat, especially for early Yellowstone drives or evening football games

If you're heading toward Yellowstone or up into the mountains, expect colder temperatures and a real chance of snow on the passes.  Check road and weather conditions before you go, and keep your plans flexible.

October Is Shoulder Season in Montana (and That's a Good Thing)

One of the best reasons to visit Montana in October is that summer's crowds have cleared out.   Yellowstone National Park sees a fraction of its July traffic, popular trails are quiet, and hotels across the region drop from peak-season rates.

October is also your last easy window to drive the park by car. Most of  Yellowstone's roads stay open to regular vehicles through October 31 before nearly all of them close for the winter on November 1. That gives you time to see Old Faithful, the geyser basins, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone before the snow-season shutdown. A few high mountain routes, like Dunraven Pass and the Beartooth Highway, close earlier in mid-October, so plan those first if they're on your list.

Shoulder season is where Belgrade really shines. The already-affordable hotels get even more budget-friendly, and you're about 15 minutes from downtown Bozeman and roughly 90 minutes from Yellowstone's North Entrance. You can spend your days out exploring and come back to a quiet   small-town Montana pace at night.

Fall Colors and Harvest Season in the Gallatin Valley

Fall color peaks here from late September through mid-October, when the valley's cottonwoods and the aspens up in the canyons turn bright gold. Some of the best spots to catch it are  Hyalite Canyon south of Bozeman, the drive up Gallatin Canyon toward Big Sky, and the backroads and river bottoms right around Belgrade.

This is also harvest time, and Belgrade wears its agricultural roots proudly. The town grew up around a grain elevator and farm country, so autumn is when a lot of that heritage comes to life: farm stands stocked with squash and pumpkins, fresh-pressed cider, and weekend markets selling local produce and baked goods. It's a genuine working-town version of fall.

Popular Things to Do in Montana in October

October weather still leaves plenty of room for the outdoors, with a fall twist. Here's what tends to top visitor lists:

  • Chase the fall colors on foot: Trails like   Palisade Falls and the  paths around Hyalite Reservoir are gorgeous once the leaves turn, and they're far less crowded than in summer.
  • Fly fish the fall run: Autumn is prime time on the Madison, Gallatin, and Yellowstone Rivers, with brown trout on the move and hardly another angler in sight. See our guide to the   best fly fishing near Belgrade for rivers, access points, and local outfitters.
  • Take a last-call Yellowstone day trip: With the park's roads open through October 31, you can still drive to the geyser basins and catch the tail end of the elk rut, when bulls bugle around Mammoth. Our   Yellowstone planning page has driving routes and tips.
  • Hit a pumpkin patch or corn maze: The  Montana Corn Maze in nearby Manhattan and the seasonal hay-bale maze between Bozeman and Belgrade are easy,   kid-friendly outings .  Rocky Creek Farm runs pumpkins, cider, and fall festivities on weekends through October.

Bobcat Football and Fall Events Around the Valley

A short drive from Belgrade, the rest of the valley leans into fall too:

  • Montana State Bobcat football: Gameday is the heartbeat of a Bozeman fall, and Belgrade is the smart place to stay for it. In 2026, the   Bobcats host Weber State on Saturday, Oct. 24, and Cal Poly on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Bobcat Stadium. Home tickets sell out fast, so grab seats early, and see our guide on   where to stay for Bobcat football to base yourself 15 minutes away and skip the gameday traffic and pricing in town.
  • Bridger Raptor Festival : Each early October, Bridger Bowl hosts this long-running celebration of the golden eagle migration, with viewing sites, guided hikes, and family programs. It's free and a local favorite.
  • Harvest markets and fall festivals: Bozeman-area harvest events, like the family-friendly Harvest Market at  Yellowstone Alliance Adventures in early October, bring together pumpkin patches, hayrides, food trucks, and vendors within a short drive of Belgrade.

Downtown Belgrade in the fall

Fall in Belgrade: Local Events, Food, and Shops

You don't have to leave town to enjoy fall. Belgrade has its own seasonal rhythm, and it's an easy place to spend a crisp October day.

On Halloween, downtown Belgrade hosts  Trick or Treat Street , a free, family-friendly evening where local businesses and organizations hand out candy along Main Street. It's a real small-town tradition and a short walk from wherever you're staying in town. Earlier in the season, the town's community farmers market and nearby farm stands stay stocked with pumpkins, apples, and cider. For the full rundown, see our guide to   fall events in Belgrade .

When the weather turns cold, Belgrade's food and drink scene is a good place to land. Warm up over local pints at the town's   breweries and distilleries , like   Madison River Brewing ,   Bar 3 BBQ & Brewing , and   Blackpot Distillery . For a sit-down meal,   The Mint is a steakhouse that's been serving Belgrade since 1904, and   The Local is a burgers-and-steaks sports bar that's a solid spot to catch the Bobcat game if you didn't score tickets. For a slow, frosty morning,   Café M on West Main pours locally roasted coffee and made-from-scratch pastries.

For a rainy or early-snow day,  406 Golf's indoor simulators keep all ages busy, and Belgrade's  local shops , including  Belle Morn ,  Fezziwigs , and  Chalet Market , are good for Montana-made goods and gifts.

Stay in Belgrade for Your October Trip to Montana

Belgrade is the kind of town where you can land at the airport, grab a coffee, and check into your hotel before traffic is ever a thing. Our hotels sit close to BZN and the highway, which makes early Yellowstone drives, Bobcat gameday mornings, and late-night flights all a lot easier.

October rewards travelers who show up for the quieter, more affordable side of Montana, and Belgrade is built for exactly that.   Explore Belgrade hotels to find the right fit for your fall trip.
