Your Fall Weekend Getaway in Belgrade, Montana

Fall might be the most underrated time to visit Montana. The summer crowds are gone, the rivers run quiet, and the Bridger and Gallatin ranges put on a show of gold aspens and red mountain maples against the season's first dusting of snow on the peaks.

This 3-day weekend itinerary is built around Belgrade — home to the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) — with easy day trips into Bozeman and down the Gallatin Canyon, so you get the best of the season without a long drive to start or end your trip.

Tips to Make the Most of Your Trip

Time it for peak color. Fall foliage in the Gallatin Valley typically peaks from late September through mid-October, though it shifts year to year depending on weather. Check ahead if leaf-peeping is a priority.

Layer up. Fall mornings can dip near freezing while afternoons warm into the 60s. A jacket you can shed by lunchtime is essential.

Book lodging early — especially if there's a home football game. Montana State University home games run through September, October, and November, and Bozeman hotels fill up fast on game weekends.

Check event calendars before you go. Fall is festival season around the Gallatin Valley, with harvest markets, hay mazes, and beer festivals popping up on rotating weekends — check events in Belgrade and events in Bozeman before your trip. Popular events include:

Day 1: Downtown Belgrade, Fall Celebrations, and Hiking

After landing at BZN, pick up your rental car and check into your hotel. Once you're settled, take an easy walk along Belgrade's Main Street to get your bearings.

Day 2: Yellowstone's North Entrance and the Fall Elk Rut

Grab coffee and baked goods to go from Big Shooters Espresso before heading about 1.5 hours south on US-89 through Paradise Valley toward Gardiner, Montana, and Yellowstone's North Entrance. Pack sandwiches for lunch so you can spend more time enjoying the park and less time worrying about where to eat.

Unlike the park's other entrances, this route stays open to regular vehicle traffic year-round, making it the way into Yellowstone in the fall. The drive itself is one of the best in the state, with the Yellowstone River running alongside the highway and the Absaroka Range rising on either side, its slopes turning gold and rust with the season.

Fall is one of the best times to visit for wildlife, as it's peak elk rut season. During the rut, bull elk compete for mates by bugling — an eerie, otherworldly call — and the open grasslands around Mammoth Hot Springs are one of the most reliable spots in the entire park to see and hear it firsthand. Give yourself time to walk the boardwalk trails around the travertine terraces, then keep an eye on the surrounding hillsides, where elk frequently gather this time of year.

From Mammoth, continue on to Lamar Valley, often called America's Serengeti, for some of the best wildlife viewing in the park. Along with elk, keep watch for bison, pronghorn, and possibly wolves in the distance. Pull over, cut the engine, and give the valley a few quiet minutes — that's usually when the best sightings happen.

If you have time, enjoy a soak in Yellowstone Hot Springs, with several outdoor pools surrounded by mountains. Return to Belgrade for dinner at Rice Fine Thai Cuisine or Sheridan’s BBQ, a food truck outside Madison River Brewing (one of the best places to grab a drink in Belgrade).

Day 3: Harvest Markets and Downtown Bozeman

On your final morning, grab breakfast at Center Ice Cafe & Bakery, a funky hockey-themed spot serving traditional breakfast food, or Cuppa Jo on the Go, a coffee shop serving breakfast burritos and sandwiches, in Belgrade before heading into Bozeman for a few hours.

Kids will enjoy the fall festival at Gallatin Valley Botanical at Rocky Creek Farm, which offers pumpkin picking, cider pressing, and hayrides throughout the fall season. Make sure to reserve your time slot beforehand — this is one of the more popular things to do near Belgrade in the fall, and it fills up quickly!

For an easy afternoon walk with a payoff view, head to Peet's Hill. The walking loop takes you up a short hill with sweeping views back over Bozeman's tree-lined streets, where cottonwoods, maples, and aspens turn brilliant gold and red against the Bridger Mountains — one of the best low-effort foliage viewpoints in the valley. If you’re up for a longer hike, Triple Tree Trail is a 5.4-mile hike with stunning foliage, thanks to all the aspens lining the trail. The section with the most aspens is about a mile in, so you don’t need to do the full climb if you’re just after autumn leaves.

Spend your last hour or two browsing downtown Bozeman's Main Street shops, which take on a cozier feel once the summer patio crowds thin out. If you have room in the schedule, the Gallatin History Museum or the Museum of the Rockies is a solid rainy-day option and a reliable hit for families.

Head back to Belgrade with time to spare before your flight — with the airport just minutes from town, there's no need to rush your last day in the Gallatin Valley.
