This 7-day Montana road trip takes visitors from Belgrade, Montana, through the dramatic peaks of Glacier National Park, across the wild heart of Montana, and into the geothermal wonderland of Yellowstone. With carefully planned stops, scenic drives, and family-friendly activities, this itinerary maximizes mountain time while keeping logistics simple.

Day 1: Arrive via the Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN)

After picking up your rental car, van, or RV and checking into your hotel, spend the afternoon settling in and preparing for the days ahead.

Explore Belgrade’s Downtown

Take a walk along Belgrade’s Main Street to get oriented with local shops and restaurants and take in the charming downtown area. Belgrade offers plenty of quick activities to shake off travel fatigue:

  • Play a quick round at 406 Golf, Belgrade’s indoor golf simulator
  • Pop into Fezziwig’s, a local shop with all kinds of funky finds
  • Visit Lewis & Clark Park to stretch your legs — the park features playgrounds, open fields, and a splash park during summer months, making it ideal for families

Belgrade’s Dining Options

For dinner and drinks, grab Sheridan’s BBQ (now a permanently located food truck) from Madison River Brewing. Up for something a little different? Grab food from Curry Express, a casual Indian restaurant. Stop at Town & Country or Chalet Market to stock up on snacks and supplies for the drive north.

Fortunately, Belgrade offers a variety of hotels to choose from, whether you’re looking for something for the whole family or a romantic getaway.

Day 2: Explore Nearby Bozeman

Take a full day to explore the Belgrade, Montana, area and nearby Bozeman. Start with breakfast at Cafe Havana in Belgrade, an informal latin-inspired restaurant (yes, they serve coffee too) before driving the 15 minutes to Bozeman.

Quintessential Bozeman Activities

  • Hike the College M Trail
  • Walk around downtown Bozeman's Main Street, browsing local shops
  • Get happy hour at Copper Whiskey Bar, which serves American food and of course, whiskey

Dinner in Belgrade

Return to Belgrade for dinner at Rice Fine Thai Cuisine, a relaxed Thai spot, or Rosa's Pizza, a casual pizza joint. Afterwards, download the NPS app. Cell service is limited in both Glacier and Yellowstone, and the app gives you offline access to maps, activities, and more.

Day 3: Montana Road Trip North to Glacier National Park

Note: Vehicle reservations are no longer required in Glacier National Park in 2026. Instead, the park is limiting parking in Logan Pass to three hours and piloting a ticketed-only shuttle system. See the shuttle map here and purchase tickets here.

Start the day with breakfast at Center Ice Cafe, a fun hockey-themed breakfast place in Belgrade before heading north on US-191 toward Glacier National Park. Expect about 4.5 hours of driving.

US-191 N winds through ranch country and gradually transitions into forested terrain. Stop in Choteau, Montana, at the Old Trail Museum for a brief cultural detour. This quirky museum showcases pioneer history and dinosaur fossils, offering context for Montana's natural heritage.

Arrival in Glacier

Arrive at the Many Glacier area on the east side of Glacier National Park in the afternoon. Many Glacier offers some of Montana's most accessible and photogenic glacier-fed lakes.

Spend your remaining daylight hours at Swiftcurrent Lake, accessible via easy boardwalk trails. Relax and take in the turquoise waters and surrounding peaks, a welcome respite after the long drive.

Day 4: Full Day Exploring Glacier National Park

Dedicate this entire day to Glacier National Park, one of the crown jewels of any Montana road trip. Start early at Going-to-the-Sun Road, the park's most scenic drive. This 50-mile highway climbs over 3,000 feet and crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, offering panoramic views of the incredible scenery.

Remember — per park rules, you can either park here for up to three hours, or purchase shuttle tickets.

Key Stops Along Going-to-the-Sun Road

Afternoon & Evening Activities in Glacier

After lunch, rent a kayak at Many Glacier Hotel from Glacier Park Boat Company to explore the turquoise waters from a different perspective. Before sunset, drive to Lake McDonald, the park's largest lake, for evening light and potential wildlife viewing.

Day 5: Scenic Drive South Through Central Montana

Drive south toward Helena, Montana's capital city, which takes about 4 hours. Grab lunch at a local restaurant, such as Lewis & Clark Brewing, which serves pizza and great beer.

Back in Belgrade

From Helena, Montana, continue south back to Belgrade, about 1.5 hours away.

Stay at one of the many hotels in Belgrade, spending the evening preparing for tomorrow's adventure into Yellowstone National Park. Confirm your park reservations, review your map of the park, and get to bed early for an energized start on Day 6.

Day 6: Arrive at Yellowstone National Park

Enter Yellowstone National Park through the West Entrance in West Yellowstone, Montana. This entrance provides direct access to the park's most dramatic thermal features, making it ideal for maximizing your time during your Montana road trip's final full day in the parks.

Yellowstone Highlights

Check into your hotel or campground inside Yellowstone or in West Yellowstone, Montana, for the night. Spend your evening at a ranger-led program to deepen your understanding of the park's geology and ecology.

Day 7: Final Morning in Belgrade and Fly Home

Return to Belgrade, Montana, for your final morning. The North Entrance offers the most scenic route back to Belgrade, Montana, via US-89 N through Paradise Valley — about 1.5 hours of drive time.

Final Stops in Yellowstone

  • Check out Lamar Valley on your way out — this is where you’re most likely to see wildlife in the park
  • Walk along the boardwalk trails at Mammoth Hot Springs to see the park's striking terraced travertine formations

Back in Belgrade, grab breakfast, lunch, or dinner at one of the town’s many restaurants. Have a little extra time? There are so many quick things to do in Belgrade before your flight!

Pro Tips for Your Montana Road Trip

Pack Smart: Bring binoculars, layers of clothing, and rain jackets. Weather changes rapidly, even during summer months, and binoculars transform distant wildlife into memorable encounters.

Download Essential Apps: Before leaving Belgrade, Montana, download the NPS app and save maps for offline use. Cell service will be spotty throughout your trip, especially in the parks.

Plan Your Timing: Peak season (July-August) brings crowds to both parks. Late June and September offer cheaper prices, fewer people, and often better wildlife viewing.

Reserve Accommodations Early: Hotels and campgrounds fill quickly. Book at least three months in advance, especially for summer travel.

Check Road Conditions: Winter and early spring may close Going-to-the-Sun Road and other mountain passes. Visit MDOT Road Conditions before finalizing your Montana road trip dates.
